The President’s
Message
Dear
Coaches:
Once again, welcome to a new year of fun and
excitement coaching and teaching our student athletes! I
truly hope that as you start this new year you are excited
and strongly believe that you do make a difference! In our
profession as teachers and coaches, we don’t get the thanks
and encouragement that we deserve, so I want to start out
this new year by giving you all a huge THANK YOU!!!
Continue doing what you do to shape and guide the amazing
female athletes that we have here in Colorado.
I would
like to take this opportunity to welcome two new members to
the CCGS Board. They are Monica Tuz , Broomfield Varsity
Volleyball Coach, and Dave Walck, Rangely Varsity Volleyball
Coach. Monica is joining our Board as our Secretary and
Dave will be our Vice President. We are very excited to
have them with us!
Speaking of excited, if you haven’t heard, Marcia Neville is
now apart of Fox Sports and they are bringing an exciting
element to high school sports, a website dedicated to airing
edited videotape. At
foxhilitescolorado.com,
coaches, parents, students, etc. can edit their own
videotape, upload it to Fox Sports and share it online! Any
video that is uploaded to the website has the chance to be
shown on a Fox 31 sportscast.

Helen
McCall Coach of the Year - Terri Ward, Niwot H. S.
Terri Ward, Niwot H.S.’s basketball coach, the 2007 Helen
McCall Memorial Award winner epitomizes the interest and
values of Helen McCall and what this award stands for!
Coach Ward grew up in Colorado and graduated a three sport
athlete in 1976. Coach Ward probably didn’t know how lucky
she was at the time since girl’s sports were not sanctioned
by CHSAA until the 1974-1975 school year. Even at a young
age Terri Ward was committed to excellence! She not only
was a three sport athlete, She was a member of the
National Honor Society and was the Student Body Vice
President. She continued her education at the University of
Northern Colorado playing four years of basketball.
Graduating in
1980, Coach Ward spent two years teaching physical education
and coaching in New Mexico. Learning of teaching and
coaching opportunities in Niwot she returned to coach
volleyball, basketball, and track. Coach Ward took an eight
year leave of absence from high school coaching to become a
member of the University of Colorado’s coaching staff under
Ceal Barry, learning the in’s and out’s of Division I
basketball. This experience opened many doors for Coach
Ward with USA Basketball and the Olympic Committee. She had
the opportunity to work with the 1996 US Olympic Gold Medal
Women’s Basketball Team and has been able to work many of
the basketball trials for USA Basketball.
Returning to high school coaching, Coach Ward has spent 17
years coaching basketball being awarded the Tri-Valley Coach
of the Year for the ’96-97 season and the Denver Post 4A
Coach of the Year that same season. She spent 9 years
coaching volleyball and track. She was awarded the
Tri-Valley Coach of the Year for volleyball in the 1993-1994
and 1997-1998 seasons. In 2006, Coach Ward was recognized
with the Make A Difference Award given by Olsen & Brown.
This award recognizes teachers and/or coaches in the
Longmont/Boulder area for their service to the community and
their children. You may also see her face at the State
Volleyball tournament as she takes her elementary students
to the games to be ball shaggers!
Coach
Ward has been an active member of CCGS. After leaving the
college ranks she became totally involved with the All-State
Games serving as Basketball Chairperson for over 8 years.
She held the position of Vice President and is our current
CCGS President, a position she has held since 1999. It is
with great enthusiasm that we honor Coach Terri Ward, the
2007 Helen McCall Memorial Award winner!

Coming this fall:
-Look
for the Prep Zone, every Saturday night at 9:30, as part of
our “Double Coverage” sports program.
-We’ll
feature weekly MVP’s on Tuesday and Wednesday nights on FOX
31 News at 9:00.
-Sky
FOX will provide Friday night football Skylites.
-And,
best of all, we’re introducing a brand new website devoted
exclusively to high school sports and
activities!
By August 15, the Prep Zone will be up and running on-line
at foxhilitescolorado.com. This is a place where students,
parents, faculty, officials, COACHES, and boosters can edit
their own videotape, upload it to us, and share it on-line
with the entire planet! We’re talking video gathered and
edited by anyone with a camera. We’re talking every school
in the state. Every sport. And, every activity.
We can even set up a special section dedicated to coaching
videos… clinics, reviews… whatever you’d like… right there
where your entire membership can see them.
The Prep Zone is a place where Montezuma-Cortez and Arvada
West can be equally represented. A place where football and
cross country can get the same amount of exposure. A place
where female athletes can get just as much recognition as
the boys.
And, anytime a video gets uploaded to the
foxhilitescolorado.com website, there’s a chance that it
could be shown on a FOX 31 sportscast!
Get in the Zone!

FIFTH ANNUAL RUBY MILLER SCHOLARSHIP
SCRAMBLE A SUCCESS
A tournament-record, eighty-eight golfers enjoyed the chilly
but sunny skies at Indian Tree Golf Course in Arvada on June
8. The 7:30 a.m., shotgun competition was held in three
flights--Women, Men and Co-ed. The highly-competitive
women’s flight was won by a team put together by former
softball coach and CCGS auditor, Kim Wells. She and
teammates, Winnie Lichtner, Karen Chase, and
Debbie Beneck, shot a 6-under-par 68. The men’s
flight was won by perennial favorites, four teachers from
Adams City High School, Tom Bradley, Dave Rolla, Vic
Rolla, and Brad Messer, who shot a fantastic 60.
Co-ed winners were the youthful team of Annette Kvamme,
Eric Kvamme, Mark Howell, and Mark Moffett who
shot a 64. The tentative date for the 2008
tournament is Friday, June 6. Mark your
calendar!
This year’s
tournament was the best yet. Personalized bag tags were
awarded to Pat Johnson, Mary and Severt Kvamme,
Bob Ottewill, Sam Parker, and Carol Tebo for five
years of participation. Engraved golf bag watches were
presented to sponsors Mick Montgomery of Denver
Athletic and to Ed Fogle, Wells Fargo
Investments, for their generous support of the
Ruby Miller Scholarship. New hole sponsors this year
were Drew Financial Services and Arvada
Vision Clinic. Please remember our sponsors when
you have need of services they could provide.
An
application for the Ruby Miller Scholarship is included
in this newsletter. Please encourage your senior athletes
to apply. The scholarships are presented to four
seniors who have an interest in coaching. See other
criteria on the application form which is to be received by
Feb. 12, 2008. Four scholarships of $750 were presented in
2007. Congratulations to scholarship winners and their
coaches: Amanda Brown, Limon; Christine
Hormann, Cherokee Trail; Danika Jostes, Stratton;
and Crystal Loch, Alamosa. Feedback from three of
the first class of winners in 2002 indicated that the three
heard from had all been coaching on some level since
college. That’s our goal—to encourage young women
to go into coaching as a career.
Scholarship
application forms can be found
here.
