HALL OF FAME RECIPIENT
Sandra Cole
Our 2004, Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports Hall of Fame Recipient,
Sandra Cole graduated from the University of Northern Colorado in
1967. From there she spent three short years teaching in California
and Agana, Guam. After three years, the state of Colorado was lucky
enough for Coach Cole to return home and plant herself at Platte
Valley High School where she made an impact as the varsity
volleyball coach! We do have to back up a minute because when she
first arrived, Platte Valley did not have sports for girls. In
1973, Sandra Cole presented a proposal to the school district and
Board of Education to fund competitive athletics for girls, and in
the fall of 1973 the district began funding three sports for girls:
volleyball, gymnastics, and track & field. Coach Cole coached all
three sports until the state sanctioned volleyball and the season
was switched from spring to fall. She continued to coach both track
& field and volleyball until 1981. Earlier in 1979, Coach Cole
again persuaded the district, with the help of Title IX, to add a
junior high athletics program.
Coach Sandra Cole is
not just a go-getter; she knows the importance of athletics and
knows how to get every ounce out of her players. At her retirement
from coaching at Platte Valley she had an 85% winning average with a
career record of 325 wins to 53 losses. Her teams have won 9 State
Championships, 1 Second Place finish, 1 Third Place finish and 1
state Consolation Champion. They also recorded 12 District
Championships, 10 Sub-District Championships, and were the League
Champions 10 times. Ms. Cole did take a season off to serve as the
Assistant Coach at UNC in 1980 as she earned her Masters degree.
Not that volleyball kept her busy, the state also had the benefit of
Coach Cole’s talents. She was an active member of CCGS, CHSCA, the
American Alliance for Health, Physical Education and Dance, the
National Association for Girls and Women’s Sports, the Northern
Plains League, and the Welco League.
Understanding Sandra
Cole’s involvement in education and athletics during her career it
isn’t surprising to hear of her many honors. To name a few: Coach
of the Year named by Toyota in ’88 & ’89 and named by the Rocky
Mountain News in ’76. ’78, ’81, ’84, ’86, & ’88. In ’88 Cole was
named the Rocky Mountain News All Classification Coach of the Year.
She was nominated for the CHSAA Coach of the Year three times
winning the honor in 1988.
Cole was honored as the National High School
Athletic Coaches Association National High School Coach of the Year
in '89 as well as the National High School Athletic Coaches
Association Region VI Coach of the Year in ’85 &
’89. She coached the CCGS All-State Volleyball Team in ’79 and ’90
and the CHSCA All-State Team in ’90. Her most prestigious Awards
are probably the National High School Athletic Coaches
Association National High School Coach of the Year in 1989, YMCA Sportswoman of Colorado Coach of the Year in
1989 and CHSCA Hall of Fame in 1998.
Coach Sandra Cole dedicated herself to the
betterment of girls and young women in the state of Colorado. After
her retirement from coaching she taught junior high and senior high
physical education until 1999. In 1988 she studied 5, 6, and 7 year
olds to see if this age group could achieve mature movement patterns
through a quality daily physical education program. She and Dr.
Cynthia Carlisle, UNC wrote and taught the curriculum for two years
to a group of kindergarten and first grade students. Their findings
were presented at the State, National, and International level in
1992.
It is with pride and
enthusiasm that we congratulate Sandra Cole as our CCGS Hall of Fame
2004 Recipient!

A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
Happy Holidays and Seasons Greetings!! Since we are
officially into the holiday season, I would like to take this
opportunity to pass along these few wishes:
1. Here’s wishing you an injury free and successful
season (we all will have our own definition of success).
2. Here’s wishing that we all realize that as coaches,
we all have a profound affect on our athletes (we determine whether
it is positive or negative).
3. Here’s wishing you a long tenure in this wonderful
world of coaching. The monetary rewards are definitely not great,
but everything else is priceless.
Once again, thank you for everything that you do for girls’
sports!!
Happy Holidays!!

NOMINATE A COACH OF THE YEAR
The Colorado Coaches of Girls Sports honors a coach every year
at the All-State Basketball Banquet with the Helen McCall Coach of
the Year Award. We are looking for nominations for this great
honor. Please consider coaches who you know who have coached for at
least 10 years and have been active in providing athletic
opportunities for girls. Helen McCall, the first basketball coach
at Westminster High School and founder of CCGS, was a go getter and
dedicated her life to furthering the opportunities for girls in
Colorado. The person you nominate need not be a state champion but
a coach who truly believes in building a successful foundation for
young women through athletics. This strong athletic foundation
emphasizes loyalty, perseverance, and commitment to the team and
self. Please send your nomination to Laura Fischer at:
brandyb@ecentral.com
Thanks for your input!
